When you decided to go shopping for a digital camera, are you overawed by the wide range of brands and model? Are you having a hard time deciding which functions or features is a must have for you and which are not?

Choosing a digital camera is not an easy task if you don’t know anything about pixel, zoom, memory cards and many others. All these are terms related to digital camera. Megapixel

If the digital camera is meant for family or vacation usage, a basic 2 to 3 megapixels model will be good enough. However, if you plan to print large or clearer photos, you should consider a higher megapixels model. The higher the megapixels, the better quality the photo will be.

If you can afford the price, get a higher megapixel model, at the very least, a 2 to 3 megapixels, don’t go anything lower than that.

Optical Versus Digital Zoom

Always choose a digital camera that have optical zoom over digital zoom because optical zoom will product a better quality pictures. Why?

It is because optical zoom moves you closer to the image you want to capture without sacrificing the quality of the photos. Digital zoom is not moving you nearer, but, simply captures fewer pixels and digitally enlarges the size of the captured image for you. So, the quality of the image will not be good.

Size and Weight

If you are traveling for vacation or moving about with the camera, this might be a important factor to consider. Make sure you get a feel of the different model of digital cameras, pay attention to the weight and size. Are you comfortable when holding it? In general, it is good to get a lighter and more compact digital cameras because they are easy to carry.

Storage

Most digital cameras come with a basic 8 to 16MB of built-in memory storage. That is definitely not enough for you to take many pictures. You should get a higher capacity memory card so that you don’t need to worry about the number of remaining pictures you can take. A typical 1GB memory card should be able to hold about 500 pictures, on a 2-3 megapixel digital camera.

Batteries

The batteries used in most digital cameras are either rechargeable Lithium-ion or standard AAs. Make sure that you get additional battery so that you have backup when the batteries run flat.

Using AA batteries is a good choice because whenever the batteries used up, you can easily get replacements from almost everywhere.
